Komar & Melamid’s
Paint by Numbers Poll

America’s Most Wanted Painting

America’s Least Wanted Painting

the book about the project

Komar & Melamid

Vitaly Komar & Alexander Melamid use their art to provoke serious thinking and laughter about our art and culture.

In 1993, they focused on our belief in polls and market research. They hired a professional polling firm to find out what Americans like to see in a painting—What color? What subject? What size?

Most of the people polled voted for a big painting—peaceful, realistic a blue landscape. They wanted to see children and historical figures, and maybe some animals. Most people did not want to see a small painting with abstract shapes, sharp corners, and hot colors.

After studying the numbers, the artists painted their own version pf America’s Most Wanted painting and America’s Least Wanted paintings.

It is impossible to know whether Komar & Melamid are serious when they say “Numbers don't lie,” and “Numbers are innocent.”
