Under the direction of Armin Hofmann for the past thirty years, the Basel School of Design in Basel, Switzerland, has had an enormous influence on international graphic art and design. The five “universal principles” of the Basel School*#151;the expressive power of hand-drawn letterforms, the visual tension of type and image, the integration of apparently innocuous elements, the beauty of sensitively combined colors, and the authority of black and white—have been expressed in distinctive posters that have influenced the way information is presented. For the first time, posters by teachers and former students of the Basel School are brought together to celebrate and trace the school's impact upon twentieth-century design.
