Tony Auth began cartooning for his college paper at UCLA, before settling into a career as a medical illustrator. While employed as the chief medical illustrator at Rancho Los Amigo Hospital, he began drawing political cartoons and, by1968, he was producing three cartoons a week for the UCLA Daily Bruin. Auth joined The Philadelphia Inquirer in 1971 as the staff editorial cartoonist. He serves on the Editorial Board and participates in their daily editorial meetings. I enjoy hearing the divergent points of view, he says. I don't always agree with them but it makes me think-how do I counteract that . . .
Auth won a Pulitzer Prize for his work in 1976, as well as five Overseas Press Club awards and the Sigma Delta Chi Award for Distinguished Service in Journalism. His cartoons are distributed around the world by the Universal Press Syndicate.
Auth demonstrates his far-reaching comic vision in this sampling of cartoons, from 1997 to the present. His cartoons present a wealth of commentary with an economy of line and text, making his work a recognizable part of the Philadelphia political landscape.
