Rochelle Levy:
Figures on the Beach marked an important development
in Levy's professional career. It was curator Teri Edelstein who visited
Levy's studio in December 1983 and was drawn to the exuberance and promise
of the beach paintings. Although Levi had been painting beach scenes for
sixteen years, she was known best for representing horses and riders at
the track and in the hunt field. The beach scenes, most of them executed
quickly on small scraps of ragged canvas, she had always considered as
sketches. Even when painted more formally on stretched canvas, these
pictures were rather small--more personal record than public statement.
