Arnulf Rainer: Drawing on Death

Arnulf Rainer

Philadelphia: The Galleries at Moore, 1990. LCC: 89-82299. 35 pp; 21 color pls., bibliography, chronology/biography, exhibition history. Foreword by Elsa Longhauser. Soft back $25 plus s/h [ISBN 1-58442-038-3].

Catalog for the exhibition “Arnulf Rainer: Drawing on Death.” The exhibition originated at the Galleries at Moore (January 12–February 20, 1990) and traveled to Krannert Art Museum, University of Illinois at Champaign, April 7–May 13, 1990; Museum of Art, Washington State University, Pullman (January 14–February 10, 1991); and the Joslyn Art Museum, Omaha, Nebraska (August 22–October 20, 1991).

Text includes: “Images of Confrontation,” by John T. Paoletti and “Death and Art—One Aspect of Arnulf Rainer's Work,” by Otmar Rychlik.

Although he is internationally acclaimed for his large-scale canvases, an entire area of Arnulf Rainer's oeuvre has been consistently avoided: his eerily beautiful, disturbing meditations upon death. Rainer's overpainted death masks alternately tantalize and trouble the viewer, mirroring our own relationship with the idea of death.

Together with the exhibition, the catalog was the first exploration of the artist's long-term fascination with humanity's ultimate mystery. The catalog essays—“Images of Confrontation” by John T. Paoletti and “Death and Art: One Aspect of Arnulf Rainer's Work” by Otmar Rychlik—and full-color reproductions of Rainer's work bring much-needed attention to the complexity and totality of this important contemporary artist's vision.

Also available: Arnulf Rainer, catalog for the exhibition that originated at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (May 13–July 9, 1989)
