Jean-Frédéric Schnyder: Paintings

Jean-Frédéric Schnyder

Philadelphia: The Galleries at Moore, 1994. LCC: 94-68607. 42 pp; 9 color pls. and 124 b&w ills., chronology/biography, exhibition checklist, foreword by Elsa Longhauser. Soft back $25 plus s/h [ISBN 1-58442-040-5].

Catalog for the exhibition of the same name. The exhibition originated at the Galleries at Moore (November 2–December 14, 1994) and traveled to Akron Art Museum, Akron, OH (September 9–November 5, 1995). Essays—a biography by Matthew Singer; “Jean-Frédéric Schnyder” by Jean-Christophe Ammann; “Dritchi” by Toni Gerber; “Prose of the World” by Maureen Sherlock; and an interview with the artist by Josef Helfenstein—examine Schnyder's individual paintings and series. The catalog includes color reproductions of the full Dritchi series (1985–86), Schnyder's whimsical and touching exploration of humanity's “best friend.”

Using wit, the appropriation of popular and high-art imagery, and close observation, Swiss artist Jean-Frédéric Schnyder acts as a visual bard for our times; chronicling our emotional, physical, and mental landscapes, he makes us see them in unexpected, lively, often humorous ways.
