Catalog for the exhibition Roman Signer: Works. Originating at at the
Galleries at Moore (January 24March 13, 1997), the exhibition traveled to
Cranbrook Art Museum, Bloomfield Hills, MI (September 12October 26, 1997).
Together with the exhibition, this catalog is the first comprehensive presentation
of Signer's art in the U.S. It documents his sculptural artifacts and
Super-8 films and videos since 1972 and incorporates drawings of
site-specific installations for the gallery's exhibition. Also included are
I Was Here or Roman Signer: the Buster Keaton of Art by Bice Curiger;
Sculpting Time by Max Wechsler;
The Sound of One Bomb Clapping by Kristine Stiles;
and Sherlock, Jr. by William Horrigan.
Swiss sculptor Roman Signer harnesses natural
forceswind, water, and fire in the form of explosiveand
channels them to create poetically resonant and hilarious
works of art. The films and videos that accompany his sculpture
capture the playfulness of his singular process and stand as art
objects in their own right.
Signer
was chosen by a group of distinguished international curators to
be the third artist in the Moore International Discovery Series,
a program of biennial exhibitions that brings the work of innovative
yet little-known international artists to American audiences.
